Jersey is a fabric made not by weaving threads on a loom, but by knitting, that is, by weaving a thread, obtained with needles, crochets or knitting machines, in which the yarn forms loops or bushings, lined up side by side to form a stripe.
In the late 19th century, the inhabitants, mostly fishermen, of an island located in Britain's English Channel used garments made of a heavy, very soft and naturally stretchy knit.
Such fabric was named Jersey, after the Island itself, but it was not immediately used for clothing and fashion.
It was Coco Chanel, in the interwar period, who was the first to use Jersey to make fashion garments and moreover in the world of women's clothing.
Cotton jersey fabric does not require ironing. It can be conveniently machine washed at 30°C and air dried.
